Entering the same data on two separate VAX and AS/400 platforms was costly and prone to error. The solution was to have the data automatically fed from one platform to the other (DTS API), eliminating the duplication of effort. This application was written in less than two weeks by the bank's own personnel using the DTS Application Prototyper.

Manufacturing

Customer Service Tickets, produced on the central AS/400 are automatically printed on VAX and Alpha printers at several service sites (DTS Printer Services). Status report information is fed back to the central AS/400 from the service sites (DTS API) and used as input to applications that create several management reports.

Banking

Foreign exchange and securities transactions are registered on a VAX in New York and a pair of transaction programs (DTS API) launch postings in the accounting software on the AS/400 in New York. Each night the New York AS/400 transmits current summary figures to another AS/400 in London (File Transfer), then starts a batch job on the London AS/400 (Remote Command Submission) to print up-to-date management reports for the following morning.

Orders/Inventory

As orders are received by sales staff using Alpha workstations in several different national offices, the central inventory databases on the AS/400 in Chicago is queried as to availability using partner transaction programs ( DTS API). If orders can be filled, then inventory forecast data is updated in real-time to reflect the imminent depletion. When a forecasted inventory quantity drops below a certain level, e-mail is sent by the AS/400 (Remote Command Submission) to the corporate managers in New York and Boston.

Manufacturing

The production plan of a mid-size manufacturer is maintained on a VAX system. Shop floor data at several different plant locations are gathered by Windows systems and are used by partner transaction programs (DTS API) to continuously update the plan on the VAX. Management feeds sales and forecasting data into an AS/400 which retrieves (File Transfer) the current production plan from the VAX and runs analysis programs to generate planning reports which are then sent from the AS/400 and printed on the VAX (Print Services).

Data Transfer Services is a software API utility for programmers desiring to create client/server applications over either IBM's SNA network or over the Internet. Programmers can write client/server applications by simply calling a few subroutines from any platform supported high level language without knowing anything about the underlying communications protocol. The API follows the 'conversational' model which is both simple and intuitive. For rick management claim tracking software, visit us at http://www.claimtrac.com
